Honey

Alonissos Honey

Our next-door-neighbour, Dimitri, the island's bee keeper, produces delicious Alonissos honey and sells it from his tiny shop in the village.  The island is carpeted with wild flowers in Spring, and so Dimitri's bees make very special Alonissos-tasting honey.  This morning, in England, with the rain lashing our windows, I opened a new jar of Dimitri's honey and ate it on my porridge..... and you know what? I could almost feel the sunshine.

19C in Alonissos

Warm Alonissos Autumn

It's a warm 19C in Alonissos right now, and the sun is shining.  Here in our part of England, as I write this, the temperature is 5C.  Even though the sun is shining and it's been a very beautiful Autumn, the depressing thought of long grey winter days lies ahead.  But to cheer ourselves up, we've been planning our next few visits to our favourite island and booking our flights.  We just can't wait to be back at Petros Cottage.  So here are a few images to show you what we're looking forward to....

A Stunning View

Petros Cottage has a very beautiful view across the sea to Skopolos.
It's a view that we never, ever get tired of.  It changes throughout the day in different lights, and it's always stunning. These two photos were taken very early in the morning and just after the golden hour when the sun was setting.

Three Very Special Beaches

Here are pictures of three very special beaches on Alonissos.  Beautiful aren't they?  The one at the bottom is about a twenty minute walk from Petros Cottage.

The Only Person Swimming

Chryssi Milia Beach in September. One person on the beach (me with the camera) and one person swimming.  So peaceful, so warm and so beautiful.

Take a Walk Around Chora

Take a Walk Around Chora

Here are two images of the village, Chora in Alonissos.  Our house, Petros Cottage is about 5 minutes walk from both of these pictures....  It's a good place to stroll with your camera, or to take your sketch book and paints.

Chora

This  panoramic view of Chora is taken from the village square.  It's a pretty walk from Petros Cottage, through the square and along the small main walkway to a few tavernas, tiny shops and pretty blue and white houses. If you keep going to the end, there's a taverna with a spectacular view.... perfect for drinking a sundowner or two while watching the sunset.

Kind Words

I thought we'd share this lovely email.... ah, thank you Natsai and Paul.

Dear Alison and Tony,

I’ve been meaning to write this email since touching-down at Gatwick just over a week ago but have been swamped with work since (which always seems to be the way after a holiday).

We both wanted to say what a wonderful time we had in Alonissos. From the moment we caught our first taxi up to the Old Village we fell in love with it. The island was so peaceful and the people so lovely. Your cottage itself is beautiful and we felt ourselves very lucky to return there each evening. We wanted for nothing at all whilst there – it was perfectly appointed for those on vacation. Your range of maps and guide books deserve special mention as they helped us get the most from our week there: we hiked everywhere, took a boat to the marine park (saw Dolphins!), drove to Steni Vala, visited numerous beaches, ate delicious food daily. I’ve been to some places but the sunset from Kalovoulos alone at the summit will take some beating. Having the context provided by your guidebooks made us even more appreciative of what a special island Alonissos is.

Everyone said we got the timing spot on. All of the seasonal amenities were available yet barely any tourists had arrived. Most days we’d be the only people on a given beach. The day before we left the first Old Village coach tours had started so I don’t think we could’ve been any luckier in that regard.

All in all it was the holiday we were both desperate for and exceeded our already high expectations. The whole experience captured our imaginations and we will definitely return in the future. We can’t thank you enough for permitting us to stay in your home – it really made our holiday. If you’d like an endorsement for your ownersdirect.co.uk page then please feel free to use any of the quotes from this letter (though my description barely does it justice). Thanks again for a stress-free holiday booking and one of the best holidays we’ll ever have.

All the best.
Natsai and Paul

Alonissos Overview, the Official Video

I found this official video on YouTube and thought you might like to see it....
It's 20 minutes long but it gives a good idea of the island, and makes me want to be there!
So here you go, Alonissos in all her beauty.

The Luxury of a View and Light

Last weekend I was reading in a colour supplement about a house in England that was described as having 'the luxury of a view and light' - and I thought, you know what? Petros cottage has that in spades.... and it's a lovely description.  Just have a backward browse through this blog to see for yourself what the light in Alonissos is like, and while you're browsing, have a quick peep at the views from Petros Cottage too.

Price Freeze

We've already mentioned this, but we've frozen our prices this year.
Petros Cottage costs exactly the same to rent in 2013 as it did
                                                                            in 2012.

Late Afternoon on Petros Beach

Late Afternoon on Petros Beach
Petros Beach is a little way around the headland opposite Steni Vala, and it's a great beach to visit when it's very hot.  It has shade in the late afternoon and as you can see, it's a good place to swim.  Stone and rock sculptures spring up on beaches all over the island in the season, and they are getting bigger and better every year....  As with all the photos on this blog, click on the images for a better view.
